For the people who are not yet aware of the term other half let me clarify what other half means. Other half is the term used for the life partner irrespective of the clause of the constant change in the other halves. In Pakistan much emphasis is put on a marriage which according to a dictionary is a legal contract between two individuals that unites their lives legally, economically, and emotionally. Therefore much of the public’s effort is put in striving to attain the perfect other half. In this article characteristics which are central to look for in a life partner and two most important criteria in relation to life partner will be explored. Moreover a concise understanding would be imparted regarding the elements which make marriages successful.

In a society like Pakistan there exist three types of marriages: Arranged marriages, Love marriages and a combination of both. When it is asked by families or by an individual concerned as to which criteria the selection has been made. The most prevalent answer is “the other half is educated, rich (financially stable), belongs to a good family and good looking”. Now the question which arises is that are these criteria’s sufficient for one to make a perfect other half, is the marriage going to be successful based on these criteria’s? Well the most probable answer which most of the learned individuals of the society come up with is “NO”.
In quest for the perfect other half there are few characteristics which should be taken into an account. The respective characteristics are as follows:
1. Compatibility and commitment
2. Relationship skills
3. Relationship patterns
4. Family dynamics and background
5. Emotional health and maturity
