  1. Start designing the Zero Tolerance policy..no matter what happens
    Recovery has its own stresses. During the active addiction the addict tends to sooth every emotional wound by using the drug and numbs the pain. In this way he is self medicating himself and takes the drug as the medicine. During recovery period there are certain predictable and unpredictable stresses. If he would use the drug again with the same perception of medicine, then there are high chances of getting back into the down ward spiral of addiction. 

    What he needs to learn is, “What ever would be the circumstances, I would not use the drugs. I would go for healthier options to manage the stress as my body does not accept the drug any more”.

  2. Embrace the creative mindset and jump out of victim role.
    Being in addiction; blocks the true creativity of the mind. It does not let he person enjoy and use the real wisdom and creativity of his brain. The drugs block the variety of options to deal with any situation and make it unable to break the cognitive fixations. This is the reason that he keeps on getting the same results and is not bringing any new in the life. In order to stay sober, the recovering addict needs to learn to stay in abstinence, so that he may allow his brain to think in more creative way and can enjoy the real strength of his brain. This also goes with the emotional expressions, the addicts tend to be more emotional during active addiction and keep on following the same pattern. He keeps the resentments and does not open the doors of re-conciliation. During he recovery period as his brain is free of drugs than he can easily move forward to re-open the channels of communication and wash away the resentments, in this ways he gets out of the victim role. 

    What he needs to lean is: “staying in abstinence would encourage the brain to be more creative and let him to get out of victim role”.

  3. Break the complacency.
    Being stuck in a rut and having the stagnant life style during recovery does not let the person to move on in his recovery. Having the healthy but same routine and not bringing any change in it leads to boredom so soon and makes the person think about relapse. In order to move on in the growth process of recovery, the recovering addicts highly needs to establish the rejuvenating and nourishing pattern of life, which is growth oriented. 

    What he needs to learn is: “keeps on changing and establishing a new life style and add on various activities in the growth process of recovery:”

  4. Learn how to have sober communication
    The more the person consumes the drugs, the more his communication style gets badly affected. If the person wants to enjoy the real sobriety, he needs to establish and learn the effective communication as it shows the emotional stability, stress management, negotiation skills and healthy brain. If he has quit the drugs but has not worked on his communications, than there would not be any joy in the recovery 

    What he needs to learn: “ Keep on learning the assertiveness and crucial conversation skills in order to have better communications”.

  5. How to have fun while sober.
    Resuming the hobbies which the addict had before the disease of addiction can serve as a source of pleasure during the recovery. Engaging in physical sports and activities, resuming the studies and doing some job would benefit in the growth process of recovery. To have fun in the recovery breaks the monotony of recovery. It also manages the craving and thoughts of getting back into the spiral of drug intake. 

    What he needs to learn: “Go for more and more healthy and active hobbies, which keeps the journey of recovery easy”.
