The dictionary defines unhygienic as not healthful or sanitary, so unclean as to cause any health disease. Imagine eating a burger from Liberty that is slathered with dirty mayonnaise. Or biting into the grimy burger bun-chomping the on the grubby chicken patty, munching on the filthy lettuce leaf. Need I go on?

In Lahore, many of the food markets have shown no concern towards hygiene. Adulterated and sub standard food is being sold in the following locations mentioned below:

Causes for the occurrence of unhygienic food markets in Lahore:

  • No basic education has been  provided to the vendors and the general masses
  • Lack of awareness
  • No cleaning of the place
  • No cleaning of the utensils with proper dish washing powders
  • Weak legislation to endure the checks and balances laid upon these markets
  • Limited staff in the health ministry itself
  • No implementation of health related ordinances
  • Weak and unstable government
  • Poverty (shop keepers claim that they are unable to keep in consideration the hygiene since they have fewer profit margins and therefore are not able to afford disposable plates and glasses)
  • No proper funds being provided by the government
  • No strict checks ( high corruption and bribery by the officials)
  • Weak health ministry
  • The concept of making more profit and short cut to money( more adulteration)
  • High inflation( everyone like to fulfill their basic need of hunger succumbing to the places where food is provided cheaper hence only these places provide food at cheaper rates)
  • Lack or resources ( not much of the incentives being provided to the restaurants and other food related shops for example electricity issue)
  • Food handlers not washing their hands
  •  No vaccination of food handlers

Modes of transmission of diseases caused by unhygienic food are:

Obvious consequences of unhygienic food markets:

These unhygienic food markets do not only contribute to the pollution issues( open dumping of small food stall’s waste on to the roads or any available place and many more) of our city  but also to the health issues which need the dire attention of the masses since the diseases caused by the consumption of unhygienic food can be fatal.
