The article explains the concept of modeling in NLP. The process of modeling focuses on identifying key elements behind a successful performance and breaking them down into smaller chunks so that they can be replicated by a motivated individual. It involves analyzing the behaviors, language, and thoughts of people with exceptional abilities, and putting what has been observed into rich action. For effective modeling, it is important to identify the deeper structure from the surface structures in the form of tangible, expressions, reactions and behaviors emerge. Modeling in NLP focuses on two particular aspects, 1) Capabilities and specific behaviors, 2) Underlying values, beliefs and self-worth; and together they produce the desired results. The process takes into account multiple levels of perception, as it allows for a broader understanding of the behavior or experience.

After Reading this article you will be able to answer the following questions:
What is modeling in NLP?
What are the two aspects that modeling focuses on?
What are the multiple levels of perception involved in modeling?
How can we differentiate between surface structures and the underlying deeper structures?
You will now read about all of the above mentioned questions in following write up.
Modeling in NLP focuses on two things: 1) Capabilities and specific behaviors, 2) Underlying values, beliefs and self-worth; and together they produce the desired results. Knowing what to do and how to do it and even why to do it, largely makes it effective. In a particular environment, capabilities provide the leverage to manifest our identity by producing the useful combination of “superficial and deep structure”. A particular capability such as creativity, or an effective communication may support many tasks and situations. The individual must be able to randomly access the ability as a reflex action in a situation, even under pressure. The performer’s initial response to a negative result is also very important. Skills are organized around a goal, and not in a straight line towards a goal.
Skills and capabilities are innumerable; simple and complex, in kinds and levels. The ability to "write a book" requires command on language and subject. The capability of "leadership," demands effective communication, rapport building, problem solving, systemic thinking, and other sub-skills. The modeling also has a variety and multiple levels of complexity. There are Simple Behavioral skills like in a dance step which are composed up of specific, concrete, easily observable actions. Then there are Complex Behavioral skills that comprise of multiple simple behavioral actions like juggling and acting. There are measurable Simple Cognitive skills like remembering names, spelling and creating a mental image. And then there are immeasurable Complex Cognitive skills that require a combination of other simple thinking skills like story-telling, diagnosing a problem and composing a song. Likewise, there are measurable Simple Linguistic skills, for example use of key words, phrases and questions; along with Complex Linguistic skills that require interactive use of language in dynamic situations such as negotiation, verbal re-framing and stand-up comedy.
