Habit is defined as a habitual response to a particular situation, attained generally as a result of learning and repetition. Human awareness, that magnificent ability to echo, consider and decide, is our greatest evolutionary accomplishment. But it is possible to have much of a good thing, and luckily we also have the ability to run on automatic pilot, performing multifarious behaviors without any mindful thought and this happens with lots of practice. Tasks that appears unfeasibly complex at first, like managing a new DVD player, learning how to play the guitar or speak a foreign language, become second natural after performing these procedures many times. William James said if practice did not make perfect, nor routine economizes the cost of muscular and nervous energy, he would consequently be in a sorry dilemma.
